A Guide to Aces High Bf109 Models

In Aces High, the Bf109 tag says simply '109' and leaves it up to you to visually identify the model you are dealing with. Herewith I present a quick pictorial guide to help you know your enemy (or friend):

Bf109 E4
The Bf109 E4 can most easily be recognized by the yellow nose, which goes all the way back to the windscreen. The upper surfaces are green, and the sides grey. The camoflauge pattern uses mostly straight lines. The 'Emil' should be considered a dogfighter - slow, but able to out turn many of its Aces High opponents.

Firepower consists on two lite machine guns and two 20mm cannons.

Bf109 F4
The Bf109 F4 has a very plain, dark spinner, no yellow bands, and is painted a green and grey camo pattern on the upper surfaces and sides. There is a narrow white band just in front of the tail. The 'Franz' is also a dogfighter, but a better climber and somewhat faster than the Emil.

Firepower consists of two lite machine guns and one 20mm cannon, with an optional pair of gondola mounted 20mm cannons. A drop tank is also available.

Bf109 G2
The Bf109 G2 can be recognized by the yellow band in front of the tail and matching yellow nose. It also displays blue swastikas instead of the black crosses. The G2 begins our 'Gustav' series, where speed and climb start to take precedence over turning ability.

Firepower is the same as on the F4 model.

Bf109 G6
The Bf109 G6 has a yellow band near the tail, and a dark spinner with a small white spiral through it. This model is designed mainly for knocking down heavy bombers. If you're in a decent fighter you can dogfight it. But if you're in a buff, man the guns and hope you've got some good karma built up for your next life.

Standard firepower consists of one 20mm cannon and two heavy machine guns. One option is to trade the 20mm for the big 30mm cannon. You can then add two 20mm cannons in underwing gondolas, or a pair of 21cm air to air rockets.

Bf109 G10
The Bf109 G10 has a noticeable white spiral in the spinner and a broad white band near the tail. It could easily be confused with an F4 in appearance, but not in performance. The G10 is built to climb fast and fly fast. It can chase down and destroy the heavy bombers while presenting a small target. It's not a great dogfighter like its ancestors, but it is well suited to its task of defending the homeland.

Firepower is the same devestating gun set as found on the G6
