A Guide to Aces High F4U Models

In Aces High, the F4U tag says simply 'F4U' (except for the 'perked' F4u-4) and leaves it up to you to visually identify the model you are dealing with. Herewith I present a quick pictorial guide to help you know your enemy (or friend):

F4u-1
The F4u-1 is the easiest Corsair to identify. It is a basic olive drab color. Its performance charts appear to be similar to the C and D models, but I've noticed it has more of a tendency to depart than the others.

Firepower consists of six 50 cal machine guns, and it can carry either one egg or a drop tank.

F4u-1C
The F4u-1C is recognized by the protruding cannons as well as its plain blue right wingtop, and numbers on the side of the nose. Its performance is supposed to be the same as the D model, but again I've noticed it seems to handle 'heavier' when in tight combat. It can carry up to two 1k eggs or drop tanks or even one 1k egg AND a drop tank.

Firepower consists of four 20mm cannons, as well as four 5" rockets.

F4u-1D
The F4u-1D is sort of the 'regulation' Corsair, and aside from the obvious yellow nose, can be quickly spotted by the white arrow on the right wingtop, as well as numbers below the cockpit. This one seems to handle the best of the F4u1 series. The egg and drop tank load is the same as with the C model.

Firepower is the standard six 50 cal machine guns, and up to eight 5" rockets.

F4u-4
The F4u-4, being a 'perk' plane, is identified most easily by its tag, which says 'f4u4' to make sure it becomes a target for everyone with any chance of hitting it. This one has a performance edge that is not completely reflected in the the speed and climb charts. It has acceleration. Speed can be spent and reclaimed almost at will. Its painted like the F4u1C with a plain blue right wingtop.

Firepower is the standard six 50 cal machine guns, it's just better at getting them into shooting position than the others.
