A Guide to Aces High P40 Models

In Aces High, the P40's tag says simply 'P40' and leaves it up to you to visually identify the model you are dealing with. Herewith I present a quick pictorial guide to help you know your enemy (or friend):

P40b
The Curtiss P40 Warhawks that met the Zeros at Pearl Harbor and in China were mainly 'B' models. They were good planes, but couldn't dogfight the manueverable Japanese fighters. They had three things going for them at the time, which when used correctly, could do the job. They were rugged and could take a pounding and keep flying with a live pilot, could get a lot faster by diving and still maintain control, and they had guns that were powerful enough to take out the lightly armored Japanese planes of the time. In Aces High they have to face a lot more modern planes that can outdive them and put nasty holes in them, and still out turn and out climb them. Recognize them by the traditional Flying Tigers paint scheme.

Firepower consists of two 50 caliber machine guns above the engine with 380 rounds each, and four 30 caliber machine guns in the wings with 490 rounds each.

P40E
With the P40e you have a more powerful engine and guns. This model can be very effective down low in particular, using it's roll rate and impressive wep boost to control a fight and be able to climb quickly to dive back down. Even against the more modern AH fighters it can be potent.
Against one, if you can get the fight up above 12k or so, and use roping techniques, you can bleed this one dry, but beware of following it in a dive down into it's best performance alts. Recognize this one by it's desert tan coloring - well suited for the new AH "pizza" map.

Firepower for the P40e consists of six 50 caliber machine guns with 235 rounds each.
