mod_freighter 1 * I wanted to create the equivalent of a space truck. This would look used and abused, and would have a utilitarian air about it. I imagine that hundreds of years from now, humans will probably still need to haul frozen turkeys and baby diapers around the solar system in something. This is my hallucination of what that truck might look like. I modeled this ship in DOGA (a freeware utility), converted it to DXF file format and then imported it into Bryce 5.5. * 864 x 582 * (25KB)
mod_freighter 2 * Although this is not a scene per se, and really just a showing off of the model, I wanted to convey the loneliness of space too, and what that might look like. Here we see the truck on its silent route, with the sun's corona lighting up the space around it. * 864 x 582 * (20KB)
mod_freighter 3 * How's this for loneliness? Do the long haul truckers riding the empty highways of the US Midwest in the middle of the night find this familiar? I hope I captured that feeling. * 864 x 582 * (14KB)
mod_freighter 4 * This truck has seen better days. Dirty, grimy and badly in need of a new paint job. It probably needs an overhaul too. * 864 x 582 * (26KB)
mod_freighter 5 * A view the dangerous end of the long ship. There are several lights used in this angle. The engine and running lights, of course, and a very dim red light in the comm antenna. There are also lights up front at the bow and in the control cabin. * 864 x 582 * (29KB)

mod_long haul 1 * Another, more ambitious attempt to create a long hauler. Mankind, if it ever makes it to the stars, probably won't be riding around in sleek, silvery starships. It may just lumber around out there in grimy, oil-stained skows like this one. * 1120 x 834 * (94KB)
mod_long haul 2 * The business end of the hauler. This thing is big and it has big engines. Judging by the size of the containers attached to this sucker, you could load a lot of frozen turkeys in this one too. * 1120 x 834 * (49KB)
mod_long haul 3 * In its own way, the hauler is pretty. Modeled in DOGA, I imported it into Bryce and used about 20 light sources on this thing. There are lights for the engine glows, lights for the exhaust stacks, many greenish lights to illuminate the interior trussworks, and also several internal lights for the ship's windows and the bridge. I creaetd most of the ship's image-based textures too. * 1120 x 834 * (80KB)
mod_shipkiller 1 * Another DOGA model. DOGA is very easy to use, and for most of my modeling needs, it does the trick. If I need more intricacy, I usually start with a basic DOGA model and modify it using FormZ, Bryce or Sketchup. This is an attack vessel, noteworthy only because I modeled the crewmen extensively, though you have to look very closely to see them. There's a lot of detail there, but the amber glass hides most of it. * 1120 x 834 * (52KB)
mod_shipkiller 2 * An aft view of the ship killer, showing the missiles it uses to attack larger vessels. This model took a surprisingly long time to correctly texture, btw. I don't know why. It just wouldn't come out correctly for the longest time. * 1120 x 834 * (31KB)

sce_Arctic run * This was my first Bryce composition. It was inspired by one of my favorite old movies, Ice Station Zebra. Back in the Sixties when I was a kid, navigating the Arctic under the icepack was still relatively uncommon. I wanted to capture the sense of awe that I felt when I saw that movie and its polar adventure theme. * 864 x 582 * (197KB)
sce_Colonial ship 1 * A DOGA/FormZ/Universe Creator composition. I crafted the background sky (a galactic core) in Universe Creator (a freeware utility). The colonial ship and its shuttle were made in DOGA. The scene came together in FormZ, where I added lights, textures, and rendered the images. * 995 x 654 * (424KB)
sce_Colonial ship 2 * Another angle on the colony ship. The round wheel-like structures are where the crew would live, in artificial gravity created by the spinning carousels. This would help the voyagers stay healthy by negating the effects of weightlessness. * 995 x 654 * (423KB)
sce_Colonial ship 3 * The mean end of the ship. That purple exhaust glow is pretty, but in reality, it would probably melt a hole in anything within a mile behind it. * 995 x 654 * (357KB)
sce_Colonial ship 4 * A stern angle view, showing some of the detail. This model was noteworthy for me because I learned how to make structures that weren't just basic round or angular shapes, but more complex. Example: note the cabling within the comm antenna trusswork. * 995 x 654 * (350KB)
